Q. How do I learn Reiki?
To learn Reiki you need to study with a Reiki Master Teacher. The course will include a number of set elements called the five elements which are Reiki meditations and techniques, four Reiki symbols and mantras, hand positions for healing the self and others, Reiki precepts (codes), and reiju (energetic blessing from your teacher). When you learn the system of Reiki you begin at the first level Shoden, and work your way up to the third level Shinpiden. We offer all our students continued lifetime support and run regular Reiki share groups in certain locations.

Q. What are the different levels in Usui Reiki Ryoho?
The first level is called Shoden which means “First Teachings”. At this level you will learn the basics of the system of Reiki. You will be able to treat yourself, friends and family. The second level is called Okuden which translates as ‘Hidden or Inner Teachings”. At this level you look deep inside yourself for hidden or inner knowledge and you will be able to become a professional Reiki Practitioner, treating clients. The third level is called Shinpiden which translates as “Mystery Teachings”. At this level you look even deeper within yourself to discover the mysteries of life. At this level, after a suitable period of time you will be able to teach and attune others.

Q. What is an attunement?
To be able to use Reiki you need to be attuned. An attunement is the traditional spiritual ceremony that helps you to connect to the Reiki Energy Source and is performed by a Reiki Master Teacher.

Q. What will happen after the Attunement?
After the attunement you will be attuned and connected to Reiki. You will be able to channel Reiki through your hands to yourself or others as well as becoming increasingly aware of what you need to do in regards to your healing. You will become more intuitive and psychic and further changes will manifest in your life that are needed and distinctive to you.

Q. What does the term Reiki Master mean?
A Practitioner becomes a Master when they have come far enough along in their development whereby troublesome lifestyle habits and limiting belief systems are taking less and less time and energy away from living a fully conscious life. A Master has taken the responsibility to become a Master of themselves. It is not a designation used for ego inflation or to manipulate others. The mastery is in dealing with oneself so that one is able to stay in his or her own energy and not interfere with the path of another being. A Reiki Master is also able to attune others and pass on their knowledge regarding the system of Reiki.

Q. Once I am attuned to Reiki how often should I give myself a treatment?
It is recommended that you give yourself a treatment every day for the first 21 consecutive days after completing each level of your Reiki training. This will help to integrate the energy into your system and assist in the cleansing process. After this it is a matter of personal choice but it is advisable to develop the habit of using the energy regularly, It cannot be stressed enough that the more you use the energy, whether this be on yourself or on others, the more balanced and clearer your own system becomes. It is important to remember that the energy, when activated always realigns your system first, before moving into the system of your client.

Q. If I do not use the energy for a long time, will I loose my ability to use Reiki?
No, you will not loose the ability to use Reiki. Even if you do not use Reiki for many years, you will still remain a channel. But the more you use the energy, the stronger it flows through you.

Q. How long should I allow for a treatment of a friend or client?
Although the guidelines for a full treatment are approximately 1 hour it will depend on the reasons for the treatment. If for any reason you cannot give a full treatment remember that a little Reiki is more beneficial than none at all.

Q. Can I deviate from the basic positions I have been taught?
Yes you can. The basic hand positions taught at Shoden level I are meant to be guidelines only. You may wish to spend less time on these positions and incorporate new positions as your own individual style of working and your confidence and intuition develop. In particular, if your client has a physical ailment in an area of their body that is not being covered by the basic positions, then you should consider adding this position to the treatment. Even though we know that the energy naturally moves to the area of greatest imbalance within the body, the client may not trust this process. Treating the area directly has an added psychological effect on your client.

Q. If one of the hand positions seems to be absorbing a lot of energy, should I spend more time treating this area?
Yes, you should start to trust your intuition and go with what feels right at the time.

Q. If the client says that they are experiencing nothing, does it mean the energy is not working?

Reiki works on a subtle energetic level and some clients are unable to experience it at a conscious level. This does not mean that the energy is not working; however it is very unusual for a client receiving a full Reiki treatment not to feel at the very least relaxed. Perhaps the important point to note here is that it is important for neither the practitioner nor client to become too attached to the outcome of a treatment. You are simply there to make the energy available to them, it is their system that determines how receptive they will be to Reiki and how they will experience the energy.

Q. Should I limit the number of treatments I give in one day?
The only limiting factor to the number of treatments you can give is the time you have available in any given day. Giving a Reiki treatment will certainly not deplete your own energy, so you need not limit the number of treatments you give on this basis. Remember that Reiki energy is available in abundance and always balances your own system first. Provided you have made sure your physical comfort and needs are taken care of whilst giving a treatment, you should feel energetically balanced yourself.

Q. How does a distant healing treatment work?
The Reiki Practitioner uses their focus and intent to send Reiki energy to the person requesting treatment. They use a symbol taught at Okuden Level II, symbol 3 specifically to send the energy.

Q. What is felt during a distant healing treatment?
Sensations such as heat, tingling or cold may be felt and/or visual experiences may occur. Nothing at all may be felt and that’s quite normal and doesn’t mean the treatment is not working.

Q. What are the benefits of Reiki?
When a Reiki practitioner channels energy through their hands to the person receiving treatment, it activates the body’s natural ability to heal itself. The energy goes to the deepest levels of the person’s being, where illnesses have their origin. It works wherever the person needs it most, releasing blocked energies, cleansing the body of toxins and working to create a state of balance. It reinforces the person’s ability to take responsibility for their life and helps them to make the necessary changes in attitude and lifestyle to promote a happier and healthier life. Reiki can create deep relaxation, aid the body to release stress and tension, aid better sleep, reduce blood pressure, help with acute and chronic problems such as asthma, eczema, headaches, etc, aid the breaking of addictions, help relieve pain and support the immune system.
